August: Residencies at Trust, Viral Realism, card game update, CPRU readings & radio play, Memes of the Ages
Sweeping Statements ::: Janitorial Revue
Dear fellow discourse lovers,
Though the summer hasn’t been delivering on its promise of heat here in Berlin, we have been busy working on a number of new things which we’d like to share with you. As always, do get in touch (the0xsalon [at] gmail [dot] com) if you’d like to get involved in any of the below projects, or complete the Salon Participation Request Form to register your interest in attending an upcoming discussion.
0x Salon Residencies @ Trust: Apply Until 7th September
We are pleased to announce that 0x Salon and Trust are soliciting applications for two Research Residency positions this autumn.
These Residencies are flexible, part-time roles starting in September or October for a duration of 3 months with possibility of continuation afterwards. A stipend will be provided at a rate of EUR12.50 per hour for 32 hours per month. Residents will also receive a full membership of Trust including deskspace in addition to mentorship, technical & logistical support.
We are prioritising applicants from under-represented backgrounds. Though we would prefer Residents to be based in Berlin to make the most of our local facilities and networks, we are open to applications from elsewhere.
The specific activities undertaken by Residents will be tailored to individual interests and expertise, and the Residents will have access to the private 0x Salon library. This includes our archive of conversation recordings, game materials, upcoming articles, GAN workbooks for producing graphics, unpublished poetry and so on. As part of the program, Residents can propose new discussion topics, co-organise upcoming events, and participate in external collaborations.
Some ideas for Residency projects:
Developing closed-door salon event formats: offline, online and/or hybrid environments.
New public event formats in collaboration with Trust e.g. livestreams, panel discussions, pop-up salons facilitated by the salon card game.
New creative projects
Refining existing creative projects and output formats, formulating new output types, improving output legibility and dissemination.
Deadline for applications 7th Sep 23:59 CEST [Short Application Form]
Please get in touch if you have any questions or would like to discuss further: (the0xsalon [at] gmail [dot] com).
Berlin Salon Program @ Trust Continues with Viral Realism discussion
The second Trust salon of the summer took place recently, discussing our present viral realities. We hope to revisit the topic in future!
Virulence transcends desire. Thirty kilobytes of RNA doesn’t care about what you think it wants.
The past 18 months have - amongst many other things - demonstrated the fragility of both market-mediated capitalist structures and the Westphalian nation-state system in the face of networked contagion as global passive adversary. Our conversation may touch upon: viral nationalism, new signifiers of implicit risk models, the human costs of antiviral measures and the performativity of societal epidemiological theatre.
We aim to continue with IRL events until circumstances dictate otherwise, and then flip back to digital. Next up is a one-off session on ‘Memes of the Ages’ in September.
0x Salon Card Game: Berlin Playtesting Ongoing
We have prepared another iteration of our card deck, intended to facilitate a pop-up Fau0x Salon discourse LARP. Playtesting is underway in Berlin, get in touch to join a session! the0xsalon [at] gmail [dot] com.
Other News in Brief:
Two public readings of CPRU works upcoming, details soon.
Several salon colleagues have been working on an improvised radio play. Details are still hazy but there are some cryptic clues here.
0x Salon is an ongoing, non-profit experiment in collective knowledge sharing and cultural production. In the past 18 months we have held approximately 20 salons (intimate and private discourse sessions) on a range of conversation topics both offline at Trust and online via Zoom. Stewarded by 0x Salon team members, our community researches topics, organises events and produces scholarly and artistic outputs.
0x Salon’s event program brings together artists, researchers, theorists and other knowledge workers who engage with the chosen discussion topic. Past topics have included memes, Bitcoin’s ecological impact, interdisciplinarity, automation, abstraction, nonhuman life and collective behaviour.
As always, we welcome participation from the wider community in our conversations, creative projects and reportage. If any of you dear readers and salon friends want to get involved - we try to make it fun and you will get full attribution - please get in touch (the0xsalon [at] gmail [dot] com). You’ll be directly helping us redirect our attention to organising events, and you’ll also be given priority access to the now very oversubscribed attendance spots at the salons themselves.
